GM's Pension Fund a Bright Spot at Automaker

Despite all the bad news coming out of Detroit, and particularly from General Motors, current and future retirees can rest easy for now. GM's pension fund has sufficient assets to keep the checks coming for the next 10 years. Many fear a bankruptcy at the automaker could overwhelm the federal government's Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, leaving taxpayers on the hook. This good news is based on GM's conservative investment strategy.

Will Buyers Return if Money Flows Again

There are two elements to the current downturn in auto sales: tight credit and consumer confidence. With massive infusions of cash into the banks by the U.S. Treasury Department, the money should start flowing again. But consumers seem wary to take on more debt and lenders have tightened credit standards to avoid another flood of defaults. Automakers are hoping to see customers returning to showrooms; they can't take another month of sub-million unit month.

Nissan to Skip Detroit Auto Show

The 2009 North American International Auto Show, held each January in Detroit, is becoming an economic bellwether for the U.S. auto market. A number of niche automakers have already pulled out of the show that Detroit uses to showcase its new wares. Now one of the Big Six, Nissan, has announced it will skip Detroit this year. All automakers are looking for ways to conserve cash. Nissan's dismal U.S. sales results in October and declining sales in Japan undoubtedly affected their decision.
